Our History

Nearly three decades ago, Matt Workman started tinkering around in the field of construction. He was trained in the ways of quality craftsmanship by a third-generation carpenter. It was then that this job became a passion. In 2000, after receiving a degree in construction management and a general contractor’s license, Matt started The Workman Company, Inc. with his wife Angie. Since The Workman Company’s humble beginnings as a one-man crew, our values have remained the same. We strive to build a quality product at a fair value while providing personalized customer service.

Our team members continue to improve their skills through education classes and seminars. This helps us provide innovative, cost-effective solutions to our clients.

Combined with top-notch management practices, we offer the best-built product available in Utah Valley. Our team members bring decades of combined experience in the building industry to every job, providing our clients with top quality.

Our creative team of professionals can help you come up with a design that fits your needs and budget. Once we have a detailed set of plans, we provide guaranteed pricing. Where necessary, we provide change orders so you know up front what the cost will be. That means no added surprises at the end of your project. With the use of our cloud-based management, we keep you updated through email, phone calls and weekly customer meetings.

As your premiere Utah custom home builder, we take care of all the details. Though we have grown through the years, we continue to offer the same personalized service, making our customers friends for life.

Our Mission

Our mission at The Workman Company, Inc. is to build a top-quality custom space at a fair value while providing personalized customer service.

We achieve this through:

Sharing our decades of experience with our customers.

Because we are remodeling experts, we specialize in turning a bad floor plan into one that meets the homeowner’s needs. Whether building a custom home or finishing a basement, we help clients eliminate poor design decisions before they start. This saves time, money and regret. We help customers outline not only their current needs but also those of the future. This yields a product that will meet clients’ needs for years to come.

Keeping current on best building practices.

We offer cutting-edge technology that meets local building codes and improves energy efficiency. We educate our customers on these practices so they can balance the cost while deciding what building technologies will best meet their needs. Our team members will work together to provide a top-quality product with beauty and style that will last for many years to come.

Providing superior customer service to our clients with guaranteed pricing of detailed plans.

When necessary, change orders outline changes and associated expenses. This eliminates surprises at the end of the project. Customers are kept current on progress through emails, text messages, phone calls and personalized site visits.

Keeping our projects moving along.

We complete the majority of planning before we begin. We have a specialized method of organization to guide customers in designing their floor plan. We match them with superior suppliers to assist in product choices. We use online scheduling for subcontractors to provide seamless transitions. We maintain quality control as we go to complete projects quickly with the quality you expect.

Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

We are respectful of the fact that we are in people’s homes. We work hard to keep the dust down and the inconvenience to a minimum. Our team members are our number-one asset. We have safety programs in place to keep everyone involved safe.

Taking care of the details.

We obtain all necessary permits. We maintain licensing and insurance and make sure that all our trade contractors do the same. We screen all our team members to make sure they are not only highly skilled professionals but also maintain personal integrity that you can trust.

Community Involvement

Being a contributing member of our community has always been an integral part of The Workman Company culture.

The Workman Company has been involved in the community through membership in the Utah Valley Homebuilder’s Association. It is an enriching experience to be able to network with some of the finest builders in Utah Valley. It has been important to us to be an advocate for the building industry through participation in government affairs and education committees. Matt was elected to the Executive Board in 2010 and 2011, and in 2012 as 2nd Vice President, 2013 as 1st Vice President, 2014 as President, and 2015 as Immediate Past President. We continue as active members of the association, where Matt currently serves in its leadership as a general board member.

The Workman Company also believes in a culture of community service. We have provided carpentry labor and materials on numerous community builds. On two separate occasions, we had the privilege of being part of a team of volunteers, donors, and suppliers who built complete homes for struggling families, at no cost to them. For two weeks in 2008, our crew spent two weeks and traveled 1500 miles to help rebuild homes that were destroyed by Midwestern flood waters.

The company also sees the importance of investing in our youth by providing sponsorships for various activities. We provide youth groups with guided tours through our job sites. We hope that we can inspire a new generation of quality craftsmen and provide opportunities for our next generation to learn and grow.

About the Workman Family

Matt was raised in Utah, the eighth of nine children. He grew up in a household of sisters, with his only brother leaving home when Matt was just five. The Workman family had the unique opportunity to spend three years living in Europe during his early teenage years, providing him with enriching cultural experiences. He enjoyed tinkering on vehicles as he worked at a service station through high school. The pride he felt when he drove around in a 1978 Ford pick-up—a truck he had worked so painstakingly to restore—led him to believe his future would be in the auto industry.

When Matt returned from serving a church mission, he jumped right into training as an auto mechanic at Utah Valley State College. At the same time, he was offered a carpentry position by a third-generation building contractor. It was there that Matt discovered a passion for craftsmanship in the art of construction. He loved working with his hands. Each new project provided unique learning experiences as he perfected his carpentry skills. Over the course of his employment, he worked up to a management position within the company. He loved the unique challenges each project presented and the satisfaction of seeing a quality job done to completion. He abandoned his nearly finished automotive degree to pursue a bachelor’s degree in construction management. His new aspiration was owning and operating a quality, custom construction company.

Angie was raised on an Indiana farm, which was homesteaded by her ancestors in 1817. She participated in numerous sports, baked with her grandmother, and enjoyed summers out playing with her three younger siblings. She especially loved riding around the fields with her dad during harvest time. She learned a strong work ethic as she helped around the farm and in the family’s construction and development businesses.

While Angie often dreamed of following in her grandparents’ footsteps as a doctor, she also enjoyed helping her aunt grade school papers and doing accounting work for the family farm. Angie earned a Trustees’ scholarship to BYU, where she received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. After working her way through college in the BYU Math Lab, she enjoyed five years as a classroom teacher.

Upon Matt’s graduation from UVSC with a bachelor’s degree in construction management, years of training, passion, and perseverance came together in the creation of The Workman Company, Inc. It is a family business built from the ground up. It started as a two-man crew with Matt building decks and Angie managing the office. From there, we have built an experienced team of skilled carpenters, knowledgeable subcontractors, and quality suppliers. Our clients become friends for life, as most of our business is repeat customers and referrals. Angie enjoys the opportunity to custom-design projects to perfectly match your lifestyle. From there she is able to help you scope out the work to fit your expectations and your budget. Matt loves meeting clients on-site as he personally manages each job to ensure our company meets your every expectation. He loves collaborating with his experienced team members to execute your project to perfection. We love what we do and together have built a business on integrity, experience, craftsmanship, and friendship.

We have built our forever home in the foothills of Maple Mountain. We are active in our community, volunteering as athletic coaches, scout leaders, classroom helpers, and seeking service opportunities. We enjoy working together on home improvement projects, providing opportunities for our children to learn the family legacy of hard work. We look forward to trips back to the family farm several times each year. We love time outdoors together traveling, camping, biking, and hiking.
